Applying to College

Education is not filling a pail but the lighting of a fire."
William Butler Yeats

It's hard to imagine that the child who reluctantly got on the school bus the first day of kindergarten is now preparing to go to college.

  • Are there colleges that will recognize my child’s unrealized potential?
  • Will my child’s application “put their best foot forward?”
  • How can we avoid the external pressures of community, family and friends?

If you have asked these or similar questions, you are not alone.

At Emerson Educational Consulting, we help "light the fire." We begin by carefully interviewing students and parents. We assess the student's strengths, goals, desires and needs as well as the family's objectives, wishes and requirements. Some of the factors that we consider are:

  • The size of the college
  • The programs offered
  • The campus and living environment
  • Educational philosophies and style
  • Geographic proximity
  • Diversity of student population
  • Religion
  • Cost

These are just a few. What are the rest? We identify them and help families assess each one.

Unlike what you've heard, the college admission process need not be overly stressful. In fact it could -- and should -- be a rewarding experience for both the student and the family.

“Just want to thank you for your help way back when! I also wanted to share with you the exciting news that I was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa – I think it is safe to say we found the right place for me!”

Given the nature of the admissions process and the selectivity of many educational institutions, we cannot guarantee admission to any institution.
